Son of a Preacher Man
This man God gave me to, he was raised to be a pastor. I'll never forget all those nights as we were sitting around the dinner table at the Goodman's house, finishing up our meal, and as always in that time during our courtship, Papa would choose to begin an impromptu counseling session. Talk about indigestion. All of the sudden doing the dishes sure seemed like an appealing diversion.
One night he started it out by telling me that I needed to understand something from the get go. He had raised his son to be a preacher. Had he been a plumber, he would have raised him to be a plumber, or if he had been an electrician, Josh would have been an electrician. This man had the most amazing sense of family and heritage and purpose that I have ever encountered in my life. I resented it a lot, to be honest. I had no intentions of leading Josh away from being a preacher, but sheesh, what were Josh's feelings on the subject?
At that time, being about 19 years old, we wanted to be millionaires, world travelers, adventurers, free spirits, but thank God for a daddy who let us dream while keeping us grounded in purpose and on purpose.
Now here I sit, writing to all of you, about all of this, and Josh is the pastor. His daddy has gone on and we carry on this new family tradition of pastoring. As the Goodmans began their family on a new road so many years ago, the baton has been passed on to us. In my naivety I assumed Papa was trying to take away our options, when in fact he was opening up the world to us. Inviting us, to join with him and so many others who have chosen to follow the way of pastoring and leading God's people.
