Book Review: Whisper by Mark Batterson

The subtitle reads-"How to Hear the Voice of God." I don't know about you but this year was one of  stretching my faith, to put it mildly, and when I saw that one of my favorite writers had published a new book, and that it was about hearing God's voice, I just had to read it. It put me in mind of Elijah in the cave after his great triumph on Mount Carmel. God didn't speak to him in the earthquake, or the fire, or the wind, but in the whisper.

In his newest book, Whisper, author and pastor, Mark Batterson encourages his readers to push in closer to understand the voice of God in our everyday lives. The whisper of God is a call to closeness and intimacy. In a world where we are constantly barraged with the stress to do more, louder, bigger, better, God is still speaking and we have to incline our ear to hear Him.

God has many ways of speaking to us, but in this book, the author introduces God's voice calling out through Scripture, Desires, Doors, Dreams, People, Promptings, and Pain. Mark shares his own experiences with each language as well as examples from other peoples lives. As I read through each chapter I was reminded of recent moments in my own life where I heard the Lord speaking to me.

In the midst of a difficult year, I dove into this book seeking some encouragement that I was still hearing God's voice even in the trying times. Like Elisha, I felt all alone in my faith, in need of the still small voice of God. In the reading of it, I found that my ears could still hear from and my life be directed by the whisper of God's voice.

I received a free copy of this book from Blogging for Books.
